Tarpon are responsible for the creation of the South Florida sportfishing industry. This has been a destination spot for Tarpon fishermen since the early 1900s and was a draw for Northerners to come down and spend time. Tarpon have remained unevolved for millennia and are thought to get as old as 150 years. Average fish are around 5 feet 50 lbs but it’s common for them to reach over 8 feet and 100+ lbs. They are in the same family as Pilchard and Herring and are strictly catch and release only.
